FINISHES

Products from Henry Keate Carpentry have a variety of finishes applied to them that are carefully chosen based on the wood, and how it will complement the piece. A finish often used is wax - multiple coats of wax are applied for longevity and is food safe when cured.

A variety of oils are also used as a finish, which provides a durable, water repellent coating. Oil penetrates the wood and brings out the natural beauty of each piece. This finish is more often used when a natural look is desired.

Tung oil is made from pressed seeds from the nut of the tung tree, and may contain traces of nuts. If you are allergic to nuts then we would advise against the use of any product finished with tung oil. Tung oil is used on a number of pieces in the shop and is marked in the product descriptions to show which

Wood is a porous material that is always trying to retain and expel moisture depending on the environment it has been placed. Although a lot has been done to prevent this, It is normal for wood to warp and change shape slightly. As a big fan of how warped wood looks, the majority of my work is intentionally warped slightly to give the piece character. Never put your item in the dishwasher or submerge it underwater as this can cause cracking and other damage to the wood. A wipe with a damp soapy cloth is the easiest way to clean your item.

If you want to keep your piece as close as possible to its new condition, ensure you protect it from knocks, scuffs and scratches and avoid exposure to liquids and heat. Avoid exposing your piece to strong light as this can cause wood to fade or darken over time, which cannot be prevented. Particular foods can often leave stains or marks on some woods, so be careful not to let your piece come into contact with foods known to stain easily.

If your piece starts to look dry or dull, try adding some oil to keep it looking healthy. Most kitchen oils readily available are okay to use such as sunflower or vegetable oil - however mineral oil, hemp oil or tung oil is better in the long run. Do not use olive oil. Do not use a nut based oil if you have nut allergy.

With reasonable care your piece will last a long time, with every mark telling a story and adding character.
